The Swiss watch industry which has had a rough time since last couple of years with the younger generation opting out on buying other luxury goods other than a luxury watch has to probably do without its annual Basel World Watch Fair the coming year.

The downward trend in the industry began in 2015 and every year there are fewer people visiting Baselworld,  Mecca for watch business and admirers alike.

With the launch of Apple’s Smartwatch and other phone companies following suit, the luxury watch industry has been lagging in customer interest.

Watchmakers have started to try strategies.like limiting their production and marketing their timepieces as the works of craftsmen, hiring young celebrities as brand ambassadors, developing smartwatches to combat the waning market  in bid to revive the interest

The possibility of Baselworld being held in 2019 now looks like a slim chance with  Swatch Group, the fair’s biggest client, with 17 brands deciding not to participate.

DSC00171

Baselworld 2018 was already much smaller than previous years

Following the news of the Swatch groups pullout from the fair comes the resignation of René Kamm CEO for nearly 20 years at the company MCH Group, operator of the Baselworld watch fair.

“The time has come for a change” say René Kamm.

“We don’t need a trade fair. We might do something more creative with other partners that are out there” says Nick Hayek, Swatch Group CEO who is looking for more dynamic ways to connect with partners.

With the upheaval that the Swiss watch industry is facing this comes and a shock to the entire world.

We are hoping though to see the revival in probably a new avatar in another space.

Palladium is one of the most happening places in South Mumbai where the affluent shop for everything from food, clothes, makeup, fashion accessories to watches.

It houses luxury brands like Burberry, Gucci, Paul Smith, Jimmy Choo, Tumi, Bottega Veneta, Hugo Boss, Emporio Armani, Chanel, Paul & Shark, ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA, ETRO, TAG HEUER, ZARA Canali to name a few

So it is but a logical place to burst upon with a boutique for a luxury watch.

Officine Panerai plans to open its third boutique in India in Palladium where it hopes to catch the crowd that is looking for global brands in their own city.

Palladium 2

Currently Panerai is present in Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad through multi-store partners and has a Boutique in The Chanakya in New Delhi and The Taj Mahal & Palace Hotel in Mumbai.

According to Milvin George, Managing Director, Panerai Middle East and India the luxury market in India is on a growth path and as more international brands are entering the country Panerai does not want to lose its share of business.

By having another boutique they get to showcase a colossal variety of the watches they look to sell in the Indian Market.

For all the watch enthusiasts this will be definitely a place to look forward to.

Wishing Panerai all the success in the country.

Love the nip in the air? The smell of roasted corn, mouth-watering samosas, cups of garam chai, smooth hot chocolate?

Well we are not at our brightest in this season which makes you hit the snooze button more often than you think, and the morning runs suffer.

Make sure that your skin doesn’t. Use simple tricks to keep your glow on even in the driest of weathers.

Facial Care: Your face lights up someone’s world, so let the lights not dim in this drab weather.

  • Cleanse carefully, avoid washing your face too often and try using cold milk with cotton as one of the cleansing alternative.
  • Scrub as little as possible with milder scrubs
  • Do not forget to tone your skin as it tends to secrete more oil in winters to combat dryness.
  • Moisturize without blocking those pores. Add a bit of extra virgin olive oil to your daily moisturizer / night cream. Applying mustard oil on your face at night helps too (if you can bear the smell)
  • Masks made from kitchen ingredients like ripe mashed bananas, avocados, buttermilk or cream (malai) with a pinch of turmeric, egg yolk can be quite beneficial to combat dryness.
  • Pout pretty by scrubbing your lips with olive oil and fine salt to exfoliate. Make your you do not have already chapped lips as this will not only irritate the dry and bruised lips but may also result in redness or bleeding and chances of infection are high.
  • Apply petroleum jelly , lip balms or simply home-made ghee to keep the smile pain free.
  • Make up needs an additional base layer of moisturizer to avoid flakiness. Choose mineral or cream based make up depending on your skin type.

Skin Care: The rest of your beautiful body needs attention too. Don’t let the wind blow away your enthusiasm for a stricter regime during this season. Your skin need extra pampering in this season.

  • There are times when you are tempted to take long hot showers to combat the chill, but this is exactly what you need to avoid. To keep your skin supple tale 5 minutes lukewarm showers.
  • We feel less thirsty and crave for more teas and coffees and hot chocolates in this season. But remember anything with sugar and caffeine will dry your skin, so drink more water (eat sattu to boost thirstiness).
  • Eat lots of Citrus fruits, nuts, foods that are rich in protein, vitamin A, B1, and B2. Avoid fried food as much as you can. Give the sweet tooth a break and eat natural sweet dates for energy and to curb the craving. This will also help you keep your weight in check due to over eating.
  • Make note of winter rashes and try to prevent them by wearing breathable fabrics, moisturizing your skin, using natural, fragrance-free soaps, using broad-spectrum sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Avoid rough cracked feet by regularly exfoliating and moisturizing your feet.
  • Use hand creams regularly to avoid those pretty hands from becoming dry and flaky.
  • Moisturizing before bedtime is quite beneficial. Stay away from tight jewelry to avoid rashes.
  • Take care of your elbows because even with the body well moisturized the elbows tend to look white and dry. Moisturize them well.

Hair Care: Let that mane not get matted, avoid bad hair days / nights and stay stylish
Winter tends to make the hair drier and frizzier than normal.

  • Avoid washing hair too often however tempting it may be, use lukewarm water for hair wash. Do not for get to condition your hair for better results use leave in conditioners during winter.
  • Beware of the dangers of dandruff which is especially high in winters Don’t forget that those hot oil massages don’t just feel heavenly they nourish your hair from deep within too, go ahead indulge but don’t over indulge as leaving the oil in your hair for longer periods of time can lead to dandruff so can over stripping it by shampooing too often. So, try to maintain a balance.
  • Rinsing the hair with apple cider vinegar before shampoo helps too.

Style tips: Bring on those jackets and shawls and wear them with panache.

  • Just make sure you have pre-washed and stored those woolens well. Air them well to remove any storage or damp foul smells.
  • Treat your woolen garments well and instead of wearing one bulky sweater and then sweat if the temperature changes use multiple layers of clothes with the base layer closest to your body being soft and nonabrasive (to particularly avoid rashes).
  • Step up your style quotient by wearing your scarves and caps differently.
  • Sometimes step out with the scarf tied to your handbag belt or use it actually as a belt and later if required use it as a scarf.
  • Bring out your boots and funk them up with pieces of jewellery over drab black boots.
  • Don’t freeze to look stylish, you can wear long sleeve blouses, bandh galas, traditional jackets and clothes in thicker material like velvet, brocade, silk, jaquard.
  • Wear warm leggings under your sarees lehengas. Wear knit blouses.
  • Wear embroidered jackets over sarees.
  • Use designer shawls (especially ones with any kind of embroidery work on them) instead of dupattas.
  • If your head feels cold cover your head the traditional way or simply wear some silk hats with jeweler to raise those eyebrow as well as a few temperatures in the room.

Go ahead enjoy the winters in a wise, wacky way and yes don’t forget to smile, after all everyone needs the warmth of the sun and the smile.

This time when I visited my mother-in-law in Chennai and was helping her arrange her cupboard I was surprised to see that she had very few sarees.

For someone who is an ardent lover of sarees she has a very good collection of some of the best silk sarees and it was a great surprise that she had now a great chunk of them removed from her collection.

Upon asking she told me that the borders of her silk sarees were torn, in some cases the saree itself was tearing. That is how silk is, if kept for a long time it generally starts tearing out on its own.

She seemed distressed that this should happen and was feeling bad that no one could use them in any way. I asked her how would she like it if she could still use them in some way and she replied “I would be delighted”

So here are a few ideas I shared with her. These are specific to silk sarees but if we take other sarees we can do a lot more.

  1. Cushion covers
  2. Curtains / Drapes
  3. Handbags / Potlis / Purses / Jholas
  4. Mattress Covers
  5. Furnishings / Upholstery
  6. Table covers, runners, placemats
  7. Dresses, pavadas (skirts), jackets, blouses (the list is endless here, you can turn it into any imaginable garment)
  8. Frame the Elaborate Pallu or the Borders
  9. Tapestries
  10. Reuse just the borders with other sarees
  11. Scarves / Dupattas / Stoles
  12. Saree Covers
  13. Gift Bags  / Dressed up Gift Boxes / Jewellery Boxes / Gift Envelopes
  14. Bed spreads
  15. Turn the border into a designer belt
  16. Lampshades
  17. Use two or more sarees to make a new patterned saree
  18. File Folder Covers / Diary Covers
  19. Patchwork quilts
  20. Trays / Teapot Covers
  21. Bookmarks (using the borders)

I haven’t posted any pictures here because I would have to take them from the net, I welcome my readers to share pictures if they have tried any of these.

My mother in law loved my ideas and I am about to embark on a creative  journey hope you people join me turn my ideas into reality.

A connoisseur of the Amazon.com curated collection as well as a few Indian online jewllery websites I am not new to buying fine jewellery online.

While everyone starts with a bang many fizzle out on the journey and eventually turn into brick and mortar stores adding to their overheads which are collected from the consumers (I believe not many have given this a thought) and then the cost of jewellry goes up significantly. The same is usually explained as making charges or design costs. Making them akin to their traditional counterparts, however much they would love to deny this fact.

When I chanced upon Melorra.com I decided to give them a try. Not only were their prices much lower than any other brands in the market but their products too looked deliciously fresh.

The jewellery pieces are something I would love to flaunt on a daily basis, stylish, suave and totally chic. Also the use of semi precious gemstones is something that is trending in the Indian jewellery scenario currently, until now it was only the precious gemstones which ruled the jewellery designs making the jewllery both precious and heavy for daily wear. The whether-it-will-suit-me factor too played a major role as we Indians believe that certain gemstones (precious) are to be worn only after receiving a   prescription. the lesser semi precious gemstones however beautiful have no place in our fine jewellery.

Having said that, the quality of products is not the only key to success for most brands. The quality of people who work behind the scenes quietly making it happen for you is what matters too.

My encounter with Saroj Yaramilli over the telephone brought to mind an image of a woman who is dedicated to her business and takes great pride and responsibility of everything that goes on in her company.

For those of you who haven’t tried their jewellery I recommend you at least check out their website and you will be spoilt for choice from their vast catalogue comprising of various collections making them daringly different. Let’s see if you have the panache to carry a Melorra piece.

The festival of lights is my favourite amongst all Indian festivals.

Not only does it get the home cleaned thoroughly but you can actually turn some of the junk you may have collected into interesting decorative pieces to be used around the home during the festival.

This is how I have recycled my junk.

Use old saucers and plates to make interesting Diya / tealight holders.

IMG_1734

Cover those old bangles with silk threads to match your festival dress and embellish.

Make use of the old CDs to make lovely hangings

Colour and end decorate old diyas

IMG_1732

Reuse all the old wax to make new candles, use old pots, glasses, bowls jars

Turn those old bottles into interesting lamps

I am on a roll making the best use of all my old stuff turning it into something new and usable this Diwali and I am not done yet.

I hope you find it interesting enough to try some at home.

SIHH or Salon Internationale de la Haute Horlogerie. A fair that was started in 1991 by Baume & Mercier, Cartier, Piaget, Gerald Genta, and Daniel Roth. Held in January each year after the holidays it is the second largest fair held mostly for retailers and journalists. Held in Geneva it is almost impossible to get into the SIHH if you do not belong professionally in the industry.

It is followed by Baselworld which was the first watch show in Switzerland. The first fair was held in 1917 but it wasn’t until 1986 that non-Swiss exhibitors could join the fair. Held in March every year Baselworld is open to the public and only costs you an entry ticket.
This year SIHH opened its doors for the first time to the general public on Friday 20 January. This open house marks a new stage in the history of the show.

1. MB&F HM7 Aquapod Tourbillon Diving-Style Watch

No it’s not an Alien space ship, it’s not Saturn, it’s a watch. MB&F debuts the Horological Machine No. 7 (HM7) Aquapod. With this very futuristic circa $100,000 flying tourbillon-equipped timepieces on your wrist, you are bound to be high on style.
MB& F’s long-time design partner Eric Giroud has designed the HM7 Aquapod collection.
The Aquaopod is being produced as a limited edition in two versions, one in titanium and one in 18k red gold. The case is 53.8mm wide and 21.3mm thick produced from a whopping 95 parts.

Downside: it is that it only has 50 meters of water resistance.

2. Richard Mille RM 50-03 McLaren F1 Record-Setting Lightweight Watch

Lightweight is the key word here. The watch weighs only 40 grams including the strap making it the lightest split-second chronograph with a tourbillon and the movement weighs a scant 7 grams

A case that marries titanium, carbon TPT (thin-ply technology), and a Richard Mille exclusive and apparent watchmaking first: Graph TPT, better known as graphene, that is six times lighter than steel and 200 times as strong.
Richard Mille collectors looking to chase one of these bad boys down must do so at RM boutiques, where only 75 pieces will be available in total. Owners will also get a 1:5 scale model of the 2017 McLaren-Honda car driven by two-time F1 world champion Fernando Alonso, which is a neat little bow on a package that costs 980,000 CHF before VAT.

3. Ulysse Nardin InnoVision 2 Concept Watch

Ulysse Nardin promises a list of 10 innovations in the InnoVision 2.
The InnoVision 2 being a concept watch, it is difficult to determine how well the actual movement works, or how much of an improvement in performance much of this new tech has over more traditional movements.

Ulysse Nardin declined to share things like specific technical specifications for the InnoVision 2 such as case size and materials. In a sense, those things are mostly irrelevant given that the focus is on the internals.

4. Urwerk UR-T8 Watch

Continuing in the freaky innovative watches we bring you the Urwerk UR-T8 Watch. Urwerk is releasing their Urwerk UR-T8 watch to mark the 20th anniversary of the brand.
The watch has a reversible bracelet which allows the titanium caseback to be face up while hiding/protecting the dial underneath.

The wearer can change the look to look as if there is a mysterious looking bracelet on the wrist and by flipping it over tell time by only squeezing the two buttons on the side of the case, lifting it vertically, rotating the case 180° around its axis, and returning it back to its initial flat position.

The Urwerk UR-T8 watch will be available in natural titanium or black PVD-coated case options and limited to an initial run of 60 pieces. Price for the Urwerk UR-T8 is CHF 100,000.

5. Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysic Universal Time Tourbillon Watch

Bold and expensive this “top-of-the-line” Geophysic watch built on the modern retro-inspired collection of watches.

Geophysic Universal Time Tourbillon combines a world-time complication with an “orbital” flying tourbillon – in a rather visually stunning manner.
The flying tourbillon seems to come right out of the dial, which is enhanced by the fact that most of the dial is domed.

It has in-house-made automatic movement with the “true second” ticking seconds hand and the world-time indicator cased in a 43.5mm wide solid platinum case.

The movement has 48 hours of power reserve and is produced from 375 parts and the 22k pink gold automatic rotor is visible through rear of the case’s sapphire crystal exhibition window.

The limited edition of 100 pieces reference Q8126420 Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysic Universal Time Tourbillon in platinum is priced at around $145,000.

6. HYT Skull Pocket Watch

If wicked is your middle name you will be dying to own this one.
Imagine being a villain, this watch pulled out of your pocket to commence the countdown to doom is going to make the hero forget saving the world and he is definitely going to be intrigued by this sinister looking time piece.

With a 65-hour power reserve this retrograde movement uses a bellows-like mechanism to push a green fluid through a capillary around the skull indicating the time by the corresponding luminous numbers in the outer bezel.

Like other HYT Skull watches, the slow-moving fluid indicates only the hours on the HYT Skull Pocket – not that useful for counting down to plans of apocalyptic destruction after all.

The HYT Skull Pocket will be made in an extremely limited run of only eight pieces, and you’ll need more than just a great costume and dreams of world domination – you’ll also need the bankroll of a super-villain to be able to add one to your collection, at a price of $115,000.

7. Roger Dubuis Excalibur Carbon Spider Watch

The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Carbon Spider watch adds the first ever carbon movement plate, bridges, and tourbillon upper cage to be made entirely in carbon.
A cool black and red technically minimalistic watch has a 45mm case with the dial has a “honeycomb” pattern, made of titanium and vulcanized rubber, with the bezel featuring red lacquer.

The movement is the hand-wound caliber RD509SQ. Continuing the carbon theme, the movement features a multi-layer carbon plate, bridges, and tourbillon upper cage that matches the honeycomb decor above.

The strap is black rubber, which has a red Rubber-Tech fabric-like inlay and red stitching throughout. The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Carbon Spider is limited to 28 pieces and is priced at 180,000 CHF.

8. Romain Jerome Eyjafjallajökull-DNA Burnt Lava

A timepiece the unpronounceable name: the Eyjafjallajökull-DNA, pays tribute to the temperamental Icelandic volcano.

Introduced in a 99-piece limited edition, it comes in a 46 mm black PVD-coated stainless steel case with a stabilized rusted steel bezel.

The dial comprises genuine lava rock from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano as well as red and yellow cold enamel. Along with its strap made of toad skin, it retails for $26,500.

9. Ludovic Ballouard’s “Upside Down Watch.”

The watch not overly complex, but it is technically complicated

The hour indicator is placed on a small disc that is capable of rotating. The hours are placed in an upside-down position. The “active” hour, which corresponds to the right time, is flipped around to be right side up. The discs turn very quickly when it is their “turn.” There is a single blued steel hand on the main dial for the minutes, as well as a small subsidiary seconds dial. Simple yet unique.

The first watches are part of a limited edition set of just 12 pieces. Ballouard will make more watches after this set (that has already been sold).

Each watch will be in solid platinum (that includes the strap buckle and crown) in a 41mm wide case. Price for them will be around 40,000 Swiss Francs – which is more or less the same in US dollars.

And now serving the dessert. If you do not have a sweet tooth may I odder you some Swiss Cheese.

Presenting the $1 Million Watch Made Of Genuine Swiss Cheese. Don’t drop out of your chair yet.

10. Cheesy Swiss Mad Watch

The youthful CEO of H. Moser & Cie Edouard Meylan, releases something that has managed to capture large amounts of attention.

The first Swiss watch housed in a case made of hardened Swiss cheese, a strap made of cowhide and a red dial reminiscent of the Swiss flag.

A Vacherin Mont d’Or médaille d’or cheese comprises the base for the case, which has been mixed with a composite itr2 material made with carbon nanotubes (the same used in the Pebble 2 Smartwatch, by the way) before being machined and polished.

And, no, it doesn’t smell.

The price of the unique-piece watch is an equally symbolic 1,081,291 Swiss francs, which references the date of the signing of the Swiss Federal Charter on August 1, 1291.

The watch is made mainly to draw attention to the law regarding the use of the words “Swiss made” and in a way to support Meylan’s personal campaign drawing attention to the fact that many of the world’s best Swiss (and German!) brands do not have “Swiss made” on their dials.

He has decided to remove ‘Swiss Made’ from their dials for all of their new collections. Meylan’s hashtag #MakeSwissMadeGreatAgain along with his video staged in a Swiss barn simultaneously draws attention to the fact that his watches are more Swiss than most.

If you are looking for classy 92.5 silver jewellery in India or from India there is just one place to look for.

I chanced upon the Brand Ziveg when I was browsing at my favorite online shopping site. There was this ring which I ordered because it caught my eye with its elegant design.

I have very thin fingers so the size I had ordered was way too big.The Ziveg team ensured that they sent me a ring that was perfect for my dainty fingers.

At last the package arrived and I was ecstatic to find my supply of colored kohl / kajal neatly packed.

Imagine coloring your eyes:

Moss Velvet, Grey Glow, Nectarine Glow, 24 Carat (Gold)

Mood Indigo, True Blue, Fern Green, Copper Tint, Purple Haze

Robusta Brown, Pure Black, Rich loam (brown)

We Indians love kohled eyes and they are soon becoming and international craze. So why stick to plain black?

Especially when you have home brands like Soul Tree which  use natural ingredients like almond oil, castor oil, cocoa butter, honey, wax, carnauba wax, candelilla, butter ghee, natural vitamin E and mineral pigments.

The brand is well priced and widely available. The BDIH certification makes totally dependable.

The only drawback I see here is it is not smudge proof otherwise it is in my opinion a really great, safe product.
